Schoolhouse

This song tells a story of our time living in the old one-room school house just West of Vermillon, SD on Timber Road. Some nights we would take an amplifier and synthesizer up to the roof and play music and sounds that could probably be heard up and down the Missouri River Valley. Sometimes we'd hear the coyotes howl back at usl! At that time most of us were macrobiotic vegetarians and we did eat a lot of peanut butter and rice. Hence, the name of the song. One night, after playing at Grease City, we had huge party at the school house. After everyone had left, it started on fire and essentially burnt to the ground. Listen to the story of that fire in chapter 5 on this page.

Peanut Butter and Rice

Stars get in our eyes so we can't see clearly
Moon gets up our nose so we can't breathe nearly
The sun's coming up and we are really
On our way
Yes we're on our way

Viewing it all from the roof
A fine array
Checking it out straight ahead
The colors surely fade away

Stars get in our eyes so we can't see clearly
Moon gets up our nose so we can't breathe nearly
Oh, on our way
Yes we're on our way

And we're on our way
Yes we're on our way On our way
Yes we're on our way

Start with love
Fill in the empty space between us all
Start to give
A world that's almost forgotten how
To learn the song that the heavens sing
And our bodies swing
And we're on our way

See the school, the school's on fire
